The castle is 10 minutes walk from Santa Maria delle Grazie. Free to enter the courtyards, small fee for the museums inside. Beautiful decorated for Christmas — the piazza around it has market stalls and festive food.

Near Stazione Centrale — Milan's best food hall. Graze your way through artisan stalls. Pick up panettone from a proper Milanese bakery to bring home — Marchesi or Cova are the names.

Navigli canal district — aperitivo evening
Milan's most atmospheric evening neighbourhood. The canals lit up in winter are beautiful. Many bars do generous free snacks with drinks — the classic Milanese deal. Order a Negroni (invented nearby in Florence, but perfected here).

The spa heart of the trip. Merano has been a wellness destination since the 19th century — Empress Sisi herself came to take the cure. Hotel Aurora sits directly on the river promenade opposite Terme Merano — the front desk handles your thermal bath bracelets, gives you towels and robes to take across, and arranges discounted entry. You are literally steps from the pools. The Tappeiner promenade, ancient Waalwege walks through vineyard country, and LUMAGICA lighting up the castle gardens at night. This is where the trip exhales.

The market runs along the river promenade with local South Tyrolean crafts, food and glühwein. Smaller and quieter than Bolzano — genuinely charming. A gentle introduction to the region.

The arcaded old town has good restaurants. Order canederli (bread dumplings in broth) and speck — the emblematic South Tyrolean combination. A glass of Lagrein to finish.

Short bus or taxi to Lake Caldaro — the warmest lake in the Alps, set among vineyards. The cooperative winery on the lake shore is more relaxed than Tramin — great for picking up bottles. The lakeside views in December are quietly beautiful.

LUMAGICA — Trauttmansdorff Castle gardens
Train or taxi back to Merano, then free shuttle to the castle. Over 300 handmade light installations along a 1.3km circular trail through the botanical gardens — this year's theme is "Sissi's Journey Around the World." Open 4:30–9pm. About 1.5 hours. One of the most special things on the whole trip.

Start the day with a leisurely walk on Merano's signature 4km promenade above the city. South-facing and virtually never icy — palm trees, Mediterranean plants, castle views, and the Passirio valley below. Stop at the Powder Tower for panoramic views. Café Unterweger at the western end for coffee.

Drive up to Miramonti above Merano (~20 min). Adults-only, extraordinarily beautiful: a saltwater infinity pool appearing to float over the valley, a cave-like spa carved into the mountain, a glass-fronted forest sauna on stilts, and a Japanese onsen through a forest walkway. Book treatments — massage or body treatment — well in advance. This is the wow-factor spa of the trip.

Morning — Dorf Tirol + Tirolo Castle hike
Drive or take the bus up to Dorf Tirol village above Merano (600m). Hike past the 12th-century Tirolo Castle — housing the South Tyrolean Cultural History Museum — and continue on the Brunnenburgsteig to Thurnstein Castle for local food and panoramic valley views. Descend back to Merano via the Tappeiner Promenade. 3–4 hours, hiking boots recommended. One of the best half-days of the whole trip.

Afternoon — Terme Merano outdoor pools
After the hike, cross the river from Hotel Aurora directly to the thermal baths — Hotel Aurora provides bracelets, towels and robes at the front desk plus a discounted rate, so no queuing or paying at the entrance. 25 pools including outdoor pools at 37°C — soaking in hot mineral water while snow-dusted Alps surround you is one of those experiences that stays with you. The contrast with the morning mountain walk makes it even better.

A final Merano morning on the ancient irrigation channel paths above the city. Flat, atmospheric, through vineyards and apple orchards. The Algunder Waalweg is the closest — 30-min bus from town. 2 hours at a gentle pace, then back for checkout.

Midday — Bolzano Christkindlmarkt (en route)
Drive from Merano to Bolzano (40 min) — park at the exhibition centre, free shuttle to the centre. Italy's finest Christmas market: 80+ stalls on Piazza Walther against the Gothic cathedral and Dolomite peaks. Give it 2–3 hours. Pick up the Ötzi Museum if time allows — the world's most famous Alpine mummy, genuinely riveting.

Bolzano to Castelrotto is ~45 min by car through beautiful valley scenery. Check in at Hotel Pinei — settle in, spa if you have energy, dinner at the hotel. The mountains are all around you now.

Meet your husband at Compaccio on the plateau. After the sleigh ride, lunch at a rifugio on the Alpe di Siusi plateau before taking the cable car back down. Baita Daniel Hütte is excellent — roasted potatoes with speck and eggs, hot chocolate, wood stove warmth. Sit as long as you like. This is one of those simple, perfect travel moments.

Cable car back down to Ortisei. The pedestrianised village centre is the wood-carving capital of the Dolomites — workshops and galleries alongside artisan market stalls, South Tyrolean food, and the peaks glowing in late afternoon light. Browse, buy, wander.
